First Friday Experience

12/01/2017 - 6:00pm - 9:00pm
Starring "The Gallery"

  • Artwalk / Shopping / Dining

The First Friday of each month downtown Northville celebrates the arts with their long running First Friday Experience.  You’ll find something new each month as many of the town’s galleries and boutiques stay open late with special guests, trunk shows, music and their newest merchandise.

Starring “The Gallery” hosts an artist reception each month.  Some of our artists have exhibited with us in the past and others will be exhibiting with us for the first time – each showcasing their newest pieces in their own unique style. Each artist will be available to answer questions and their artwork will be on display and available for purchase throughout the remainder of the month.

Artists, hors d'oeuvres, shopping, music and good friends - Experience it all at Starring “The Gallery” during the First Friday Experience.

Joe & Jennifer Rutherford

About the Artists:About the Artist: Joe and Jennifer Rutherford, a husband and wife artist team formerly of Plymouth, MI, now residing in Leroy, MI, have been creating art together for over 15 years..  They began painting wall murals in 1999.  Their murals now adorn the walls of over 300 homes, restaurants and businesses throughout Michigan and Ohio. In 2006 they decided to pursue what they were really passionate about - for Jennifer it was working with glass (stained glass, glass mosaics and fused glass) and for Joe it was metal sculpture. They have developed ways of combining glass and metal to create unique art pieces for the home and garden.  They have won numerous awards at the Delphi Art Glass competition including three first place!  They have also been invited to participate in the ArtPrize competition three times.  In 2012 they placed in the top 100 out of 1700, and in 2017 they placed in the top 25 in the sculpture category out of 1350 national and international artists. Jennifer and Joe Rutherford have been selling their artwork at Starring "The Gallery" for the last ten years.

Glass Frit Paintings

These paintings are made from frit, which is made from crushing colored sheet glass into coarse chunks and all the way down to fine powders.  It is sifted or placed onto a sheet of clear glass and then fired in the kiln up to 1445 degrees for over 18 hours to fuse the glasses together.  The intensity of color and design detail is created in layers which means each finished piece is fired in the kiln three to four times taking four to five days to complete.  The stands and frames are designed and made by Joe to best display the finish painting.

Artwork created specially for the December First Friday Experience.

Holiday Ornaments

Jennifer Rutherford's Christmas ornaments are all original designs.  They are created by hand cutting the glass, assembling and painting. Then they are fused in a kiln at 1450 degrees.  They make great gifts, are perfect for ornament exchange parties and add sparkle and whimsey to any tree.

Sheila Landis & Rick Matle.

Please welcome back the jazz duo of Sheila Landis & Rick Matle.

Jazz vocalist Sheila Landis has been performing her soulful interpretations of jazz and blues since 1973. A turning point in her career was the 1981 release of her debut vinyl LP "Jazz Rendezvous" in her own label, SheLan Records. Landis teamed up with 7-string guitarist Rick Matle in 1991, sensing a kindred musical spirit. Together Landis and Matle continue to explore jazz balladry, swing, bebop, blues, poetic excursions, Brazilian rhythms, funk, pop and their own inventive collaborations at every performance; elegant, yet edgy. Matle, a 1986 Oakland University Music Performance Graduate, combines a rocker's bravado with the jazzman's sensitivity to provide a buoyant springboard from which Landis launches her melodic flights, earning her the accolade of "Outstanding Jazz Vocalist" seven times, as bestowed by the Detroit Music Awards.
