First Friday Experience

05/05/2017 - 6:00pm - 9:00pm
Starring "The Gallery"

  • Artwalk / Shopping / Dining

The First Friday of each month downtown Northville celebrates the arts with their long running First Friday Experience.  You’ll find something new each month as many of the town’s galleries and boutiques stay open late with special guests, trunk shows, music and their newest merchandise.

Starring “The Gallery” hosts an artist reception each month.  Some of our artists have exhibited with us in the past and others will be exhibiting with us for the first time – each showcasing their newest pieces in their own unique style. Each artist will be available to answer questions and their artwork will be on display and available for purchase throughout the remainder of the month.

Artists, hors d'oeuvres, shopping, music and good friends - Experience it all at Starring “The Gallery” during the First Friday Experience.

“You are never too old to set a new goal or dream a new dream.” – C.S. Lewis

This quote is so close to my heart because I totally believe every word of it.

When I re-wind life to my childhood days, as early as when I was 4 years old, I remember spending my free time sketching and sketching and more sketching. My mother enrolled me and my two older sisters to a six year art course and man! I loved it with all my heart! I learned to sketch. I learned to paint. I learnt to observe. I learned to visualize. I learned to feel art flowing in me.

Then life took some happy predictable turns with studies, marriage, kids and work . . . however, my art got lost somewhere behind. Many decades later, when I picked up the paint brush again, I found that little artist girl alive in me somewhere, and I held on to her like a long lost friend.

  • I got the courage to set a new goal!
  • I got the courage to dream a new dream!
  • I got the courage to take that first step to start my artist journey at this stage of my life!
  • And I am deeply thankful I did!

I do various forms of art. I have taught myself a lot of new things: some by inspiration, some by a teacher, some by researching, and some by experimenting.  I do oil paintings on canvas. I do acrylic art on used wine or liquor bottles. I do joint compound art on tiles (inspired by Carolyn Kinnison). I do stain art on wood, which I never knew existed. I do resin art on wood and tiles, which is a new found love.  To me art and its forms are endless.

I also find lot of solace in serving the community through art. I donated my work for auction; the proceeds of which have gone to various foundations like STEM and Black United Fund of Michigan.  I do free art sessions with residents of senior homes, which is priceless.

I put my heart and soul in whatever I create, big or small, because art is my meditation. It is my true calling!

Lovingly yours,

Alka Sinha (with Sukoon Art & Wellness)

The word ‘Sukoon’ means peace and contentment, and my art gives me just that.

Artist Statement: Julie Woodard

A quote from artist Henri Rousseau, "Nothing makes me so happy as to observe nature and to paint what I see," seems to sum up exactly how I feel. My paintings are inspired by the beauty of landscapes, seascapes,  and wildlife that is around us.  My works can be realistic or embellished with abstract shapes and colors depending on where the brush or palette knife leads me. With alcohol inks, the medium is very unpredictable, and I enjoy creating paintings that are inspirational, emotional, and magical!  Julie Woodard

Julie will demonstrate her technique of painting on tiles with alcohol ink.
